Lasers Are the Future of Dentistry

When you think of lasers, you’re probably thinking of some cool sci-fi movie. But did you know that dentists rely on lasers all the time these days? In fact, our very own office utilizes them in lieu of more traditional techniques. Learn more about why lasers are so effective and how they can help you.

What Are Lasers?

Lasers are light energy. In dentistry, they are used to cut through tissue or act as a source of heat during whitening procedures.

Why Are Lasers Useful?

One of the few reasons why people fear the dentist is because of all of the different tools that dentists use during treatments. This includes scalpels and sutures, which can be painful and increase healing times because they tend to be invasive. Soft tissue lasers, on the other hand, are not nearly as invasive and can be used in a variety of treatments. They can remove tooth decay and prep a tooth for fillings, completely reshape gums, collect tissue samples for biopsies, and even help whiten teeth, just to name a few of their uses. Because they are not as invasive as scalpels and sutures, lasers decrease bleeding and speed up healing times.

What Are Drawbacks of Lasers?

Lasers don’t have many drawbacks, except for the fact that they can’t be used on teeth that have fillings. While you will still require anesthesia even when receiving a treatment with a laser, we offer a variety of sedation options so that you can choose which is best for you and your treatment. Regardless of whether or not we use a laser during your treatment, you can rest easy knowing that you’ll be completely comfortable and at ease during the duration of your procedure!
