In my own analysis, I will use the terms in the following manner: “race” or “racial” refers to ideological constructions of peoplehood or assumptions about character that refer to biological/phenotypical traits; “ethnic group” or “ethnicity” refers to a group of people with a distinct culture and history who are minorities within the nation-state; and “nationality” refers to notions of belonging to a particular nation-state or nation (understood as a politicized ethnic group), irregardless of place of residence or citizenship.

The community was also divided about what that ethnic identity should be. Through these meetings and through household surveys and interviews, I was gaining a clearer understanding of the complex ways that discourses of development, ethnicity, and community solidarity were being articulated in these different organizations and how these revealed the functioning of class, ethnicity, and kinship in transnational space.
