What Kind of Sedation Do Dentists Use?
According to researchers, dental anxiety affects up to 80% of adults in the United States. At Pleasant Plains Dental, we offer sedation dentistry because we never want dental anxiety to keep our patients from accessing quality dental care. No matter the type of procedure, we will work to keep you comfortable.
What Is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is one solution to dental anxiety that can help you feel relaxed and comfortable during your treatment. We offer three varieties: nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation. During your consultation, Dr. Ernst will help you determine the best sedation option based on your personal comfort level and the type of treatment.
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide is a commonly used kind of sedation. Also known as laughing gas, it is a blend of oxygen and nitrous oxide. When inhaled, patients feel relaxed and at ease while completely conscious. At the end of the treatment, breathing in normal air quickly reverses the effects. Nitrous oxide is safe for patients of all ages and our patients with special needs. Unlike oral conscious sedation and IV sedation, patients can drive themselves home after receiving nitrous oxide at the dentist.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral conscious sedation involves taking a prescription pill prior to your procedure. During the procedure, you’ll feel relaxed and a little drowsy but it does not induce a sleep-like state. You will be able to interact with Dr. Ernst throughout the treatment.
IV Sedation
IV sedation is the most powerful of the sedation dentistry options we provide. We use IV sedation for more invasive and complex procedures. Our highly trained team will carefully monitor your vitals and level of sedation to keep you safe and comfortable.
